If you should ever go out fishin' with all your firearms, there could be a boatin' accident where you lose them all.

How do you decide which one to take to the range?

Re: More pistols 1911s this time.

I'm new to this forum, so please be gentle. I've recently acquired a pre WW1, nickel plated Colt 1911, and just looking to get
an honest value, instead of alot of insults. All I've been told by the"locals", is that it was manufactured in 1912, and the nickel
plating, although not original, was done professionally, and the condition remarks put it around 60 to 65% condition. Thanks.
I may try to post pics later.

    Sigpointman,
No insults from this user. But, I know what you mean. Some on sites such as this and many others have, Uh, unusual imterpretations of humor. But as the Old Sage once said, 'A sense of humor is like an (certain body part) -- everyone has one'. Now, to your question. Please don't shoot it until you have it checked thoroughly by a qualified gunsmith as the metallurgy is 100 years old, and it is no doubt too valuable to destroy as a result of casual day at the range. The NRA has a service that can help you ascertain the approximate condition. of gun by their standard rating scale as to condition, and there are a number of books available through Amazon.com which can help in assigning a general value. The key issues seem to be whether or not the gun has been modified in any way from new condition, refinished or built from loose parts. The only sure way to establish that would be to take it to an appraiser of good repute. Personally, I would recommend Little John's Antique Arms in Anaheim, CA. I don't their number at my disposal and am not sure of what they may charge to appraise the gun. It maight be worth it, though to give them a call as they may be able to give you a rough idea via a photo or other means as the value of your piece could range from a few hundred to everal thousand based on condition and provenance. Of course, there are a number of other auction houses depending on where you live such as Butterfield's and Sotheby's, which are great as well. Hpefully yuou have a ggod shooter as well, and the AC's seem to be good value for the money.

    Sigpointman,
On a lark, I went to the Internet and entered the search phrase "Colt 1911 value?" and found a great website I hadn't seen before named "Gun Values Board". Good site and very informative. Hope that helps.
